“Prince Siddhartha – the Musical” debuts on Wesak Day 18 May 2019 to raise funds for education
Internationally acclaimed Broadway musical “Prince Siddhartha – the Musical” will debut on 18 May 2019 at the “Great Awakening” Auditorium of Fo Guang Shan Hsing Ma Si in Johor Bahru.
Since its debut in 2007, “Prince Siddhartha – the Musical” had staged more than 100 performances in dozens of countries around the world for the past 12 years. In 2015, the Musical was performed at Istana Budaya in Kuala Lumpur. 4 years later in 2019, the Musical returned to Malaysia. In addition to public performances for the audience in Johor Bahru, the Musical will also create a 45-minute campus edition in English for performances in various schools. The original musical was created by Guang Ming University, founded by Fo Guang Shan, in the Philippines. The performers were grateful to and inspired by Ven Master Hsing Yun, who gave them the opportunity to study in university and showcase their artistic talents and ideals on the international stage, and responded to “Three Good Campus” initiative by proposing to create the campus edition based on the original musical. They hoped to inspire more people to “do good things, speak good words and think good thoughts”.
People of Johor Bahru, who loved education and music, were touched by the kind deeds of these University students and invited them to perform at the “Great Awakening” Auditorium of Fo Guang Shan Hsing Ma Si. They also took the opportunity to launch the Vesak Day’s “Good Seedling Education Plan” which aims to purify one’s mind through music and arts, and groom talents through culture and education. Under the “Good Seedling Education Plan”, donation of RM100 will sponsor a student to attend the musical, donation of RM5,000 will make one an honorary committee member, donation of RM3,000 will make one a benefactors committee member, and donation of RM1,000 will make one a wisdom committee member. “Prince Siddhartha – the Musical” is based on Fo Guang Shan Ven Master Hsing Yun’s book “Biography of Sakyamuni Buddha”, and scripted by a famous Filipino composer who also composed its music and wrote its lyrics. The musical tells of the life and achievements of Prince Siddhartha. The main performers are the professional performers in the Philippines and students from faculty of the Arts under Guang Ming University, part of Fo Guang Shan Consortium Universities, in the Philippines. The creative team is made up of almost all Catholic, but they are deeply touched by the story of Prince Siddhartha and do their best to present this musical on the world stage.Read more
